Bataan

Labels:

Bataan is a province of the Philippines occupying the whole of Bataan Peninsula on Luzon. The province is part of the Central Luzon region. The capital of Bataan is Balanga City and is bordered by the provinces of Zambales and Pampanga to the north. The peninsula faces South China Sea to the west and encloses its arm, Manila Bay, to the east.

Bataan will always be remembered as the place where one of the fierce battles of World War II occurred. The Battle of Bataan is famous in history. It was one of the last stands of the American and Filipino soldiers before they were overwhelmed by the Japanese forces. In fact a 95-meter-high cross called the “Dambana ng Kagitingan” was built at the top of Mt. Samat in memory of those who perished in the war. Relic of artilleries can be found here at Mt. Samat. There are several old cannons displayed in this mountain. A museum has been created to house small artilleries, ammunitions and other memorabilia of the war. According to the caretaker of the museum, when the Japanese forces invaded this mountain not a single human being survived. Bataan fell on April 9 and the infamous Bataan Death March began. Around 70,000 captured American and Filipino soldiers were forced to march more than a hundred kilometers from Bataan to Tarlac.

Other attractions in Bataan are the Death March markers, fine beaches in Bagac and Morong, Mount Natib, Abucay Church, and the aborted nuclear power plant in Morong to name a few.
